About Salsa DJ Mambomagic
Born in the frozen North of the United Kingdom far from the world of fiery afro latin music for this Salsa DJ and it was a chance meeting of a love for latin jazz and a visit to salsa club that started it all! A record collecting obsession in school became a deep rooted passion for latin music and dance. After a spell as a DJ of house music in his youth he swiftly moved on to DJ 'ing latin music and specifically salsa after finding the greater complexity of the rhythms fascinating and challenging as a music student. Growing tired with some of the bland salsa releases of the early 90's, Chris acquired a taste for the urban salsa sounds of 60's and 70's New York and Puerto Rico and particularly the lesser heard salsa groups from Peru, Panama, Venezuela and Columbia. As a salsa DJ today, his collection spans over 6000 vintage LP's and Cd's many 45's and some obscure hard to find grooves from Peru, Panama, El Salvador and Venezuela. On the blog you will find some information on some of the rarer non mainstream salsa that he collects from guaguanco, guaracha and mambo to cuban son, cha cha cha and bolero. As an experienced Salsa DJ Chris has held a 5 year residency at one of UK's largest most successful salsa clubs Salsology and has played everything from international salsa festivals and salsa congresses to intimate social gatherings and private music functions. His favourite styles of salsa are from Peru, Panama and New York, both old school and contemporary, guaguanco, guaracha, bolero and guajira, also latin soul and a touch of latin jazz.
